If you’ve glanced at your boiler and noticed the pressure gauge has dipped again, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I get from homeowners, usually on a cold morning when the heating has decided to play up. Boiler pressure issues are often linked to small faults that can be sorted quickly, but sometimes they point to something more serious that needs proper attention from expert boiler repair services.

What Boiler Pressure Means and Why It Matters
Your boiler pressure refers to the water pressure inside your central heating system. On most modern combi and system boilers in UK homes, you’ll see a small gauge on the front. When the heating is off and the system is cold, the pressure should usually sit between 1 and 1.5 bar.
When you turn the heating on, it’s normal for the pressure to rise slightly. That’s simply water expanding as it heats up. What isn’t normal is pressure steadily falling below 1 bar, or needing topping up every week.
If the pressure drops too low, your boiler may:
- Stop firing up altogether
- Display a fault code
- Struggle to heat your radiators properly
- Keep cutting out
Low pressure means water isn’t circulating around the system as it should. Left unchecked, it can cause strain on components and lead to bigger repair bills.
Common Causes of Dropping Boiler Pressure
1. Leaks in the System
The most obvious cause is a leak somewhere in your heating system. That could be a visible drip from a radiator valve, a damp patch under pipework or a slow leak hidden under floorboards.
I’ve been in homes in Yaddlethorpe where the only sign was a faint brown mark on the ceiling below an upstairs radiator. In Bottesford, it’s sometimes older radiator valves that start weeping very slightly.
Even a small leak will gradually reduce pressure. If you’re constantly topping up your boiler and the pressure keeps falling again, a leak is likely.
2. Bleeding Radiators
If you’ve recently bled your radiators to remove trapped air, that can lower the overall system pressure. Letting air out also releases a small amount of water, which reduces pressure in a sealed system.
This one’s straightforward. After bleeding radiators, it’s normal to need to top the boiler back up slightly. If the pressure then stays stable, there’s nothing to worry about.
3. Faulty Pressure Relief Valve
Your boiler has a pressure relief valve designed to let water out if the pressure becomes too high. If this valve starts to fail, it can release water even when it shouldn’t.
Sometimes you’ll notice water dripping outside from the copper pipe that runs through the wall. That’s a sign the valve may be passing.
4. Expansion Vessel Issues
The expansion vessel absorbs the extra pressure created when water heats up. If it loses its internal air charge or the diaphragm splits, the pressure can swing up and down dramatically.
A common pattern in homes around Messingham is pressure rising close to 3 bar when hot, then dropping very low once the system cools. That’s often expansion vessel related.
5. Recently Repaired or Installed Systems

The key word there is one off. Regular drops are not normal.
How to Check and Re-Pressurise Your Boiler Safely

In general:
- Turn the heating off and let the system cool down
- Locate the filling loop, usually a silver braided hose with two small valves underneath the boiler
- Slowly open the valves to allow water into the system
- Watch the pressure gauge carefully
- Close the valves once it reaches around 1 to 1.5 bar
Take your time with this. I’ve seen plenty of people open the valves fully and push the pressure straight up to 3 bar, which then triggers the relief valve and creates another issue.
Once topped up, turn the heating back on and keep an eye on the gauge over the next few days.
If you find yourself repeating this every week or two, don’t ignore it. Constant refilling isn’t a fix. It’s masking the real fault.
When to Call a Professional Heating Engineer
There’s a clear difference between a simple top up after bleeding radiators and ongoing pressure loss.
You should call an engineer if:
- The pressure keeps dropping regularly
- You can see or suspect a leak
- The boiler shows fault codes
- Pressure rises too high when the heating is on
- You’re unsure how to use the filling loop
Modern boilers are designed with safety devices for a reason. Repeated pressure problems can lead to damage to the pump, heat exchanger or other internal parts.
